Based in Manchester UK , I have over 15 years experience in the field of Information Technology. I have supported Corporate IT users in the workplace, including classroom based training sessions for groups and I understand the steep learning curve that Computers and Technology often present.

Books and videos only go so far in showing you what to do - I will sit alongside you at your own computer and help you, in plain english and at your own pace, develop the understanding that you need to progress with PC Hardware, Operating Systems, Application software and The Internet.

If you really want to progress quickly or just break through a particular sticking point, please contact me for an informal discussion about a plan to suit your needs, whether its the occasional hour of help or a more structured approach.

Now...Just for fun - How would you categorise your level of computer knowledge ?

Level 1:
I understand how to turn it on and look at the internet. If I do anything else or try something new, I might break it. There is no way I would think about installing an iPod or another digital device to the system without first calling for help. Will go about as far as e-mail and playing the card games that came with it.

Not sure why I bought the thing to begin with...

Level 2:
Was at Level 1, but I have since tried installing a printer and wireless router, both of which kind-of work, but it wasn't anywhere near as easy as the box / advert said it would be. I am scared of trying to install the "additional software" that came with them as I don't understand what it's for or what it does.

Am now heartily sick of "help-lines"

Level 3: (Or Level 2+)
As above plus I have to use a computer at work during the day. I now know what "Office" is and I understand e-mail attachments, but it looks worryingly different to the one I have at home, even though it's still called "Windows". I feel intimidated and stupid when co-workers are able to talk a language about computers that I just can't follow.

What is "Facebook" ? - am I on it ?

Level 4:
Getting There !! - Less error messages and I don't thump the desk as often. I Have also created some desktop shortcuts and changed the screen background. Still breathe a sigh of relief when shutting it down.

Am still avoiding anyone at work who talks about "blueberries".  I think that's what they are called - apparently they are like computerised walkie-talkies that Management types use for secret communication.

Level 5:
What was the worry about ? - I now feel confident to tackle any area of computing - I don't really understand it all by any means, but I no longer worry that my actions could end up costing me money.

I "might" just have a go at creating a web-site for my Choral Society with the free software that came with the computer.... think I will keep quiet about it until its up and working though, just in case...

Level 6:
Ha !! - Now I am helping other people with their computer problems. How good it feels to be able to join in.

Don't even flinch now when someone says "Blog".
